Features of Software Forensics Workbench

Many tools exist to assist your forensic analyses when you compare a plaintiff's source files against a defendant's source code in copyright IP disputes. Software Forensics WorkBench ("SFW") can help your comparison tasks with several highlighted features:

  • Fast - compares 10s of thousands of files in minutes.

  • Independent of source file character sets -  e.g., ASCII, UTF-8, GB18030, and dozens more.

  • GUIs to view side-by-side file pairs with matching line runs.

  • GUIs to help you filter irrelevant matching runs.

  • Automates the production of exhibits showing side-by-side matches between plaintiff's and defendant's files.

  • And more ...

SFW's Higlighted Features

SFW rapidly finds matches between two large file sets ...

SFW compares 10,000 files against 10,000 files in minutes on a moderately provisioned system - that's 100 million file pairs! SFW has been successfully used in cases with file sets of over 100,000 files!

For example, on a 2.5GHz two core Intel i5 laptop, SFW identifies matching line runs at over 300,000 file pairs/second. On a 3GHz Ryzen 1700 with 8 cores, SFW identifies matching line runs at over 1.2 million file pairs/second.

SFW supports your analysis of SFW's discovered matches ...

After SFW identifies matching runs of source code, your analysis begins. SFW supports you with GUIs that summarize the matching runs, then helps you drill down to the details.

For example, SFW  presents to you a side-by-side view of a file pair containing a specific matching run, showing you all the matching runs found in that file pair. You can then decide to exclude a matching run, and specify the reason for its exclusion, such as de minimis, or third-party, constrained, or not executable.

SFW produces Court-ready exhibits ...

After your analysis has completed, SFW assists you in publishing exhibits ready to include in your expert report, or to show to the jury at Court.

For example, SFW provides editable templates with which to specify your exhibits' title page, page footers and headers, and more.
